Obituary

Paul W. Bishop, Jr. age 81, of Lavonia, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 at St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born February 8, 1939, in Des Moines, IA, he was the son of the late Paul and Esta Mae (Morris) Bishop. Paul had a very full and adventurous life. He had an extensive career in aviation that began when he learned to fly in the United States Navy. He became a pilot for Eastern Airlines, while flying F-45s in the Alabama Air National Guard. Later, he served as the Commander of the KC10 Unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He was a veteran of the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. He retired from the United States Air Force Reserves where he attained the rank of Colonel.
He then went to work for Kalitta Air as Chief Pilot, working until well into his 70's. He was the actual pilot of the plane in the movie Air Force One. Although Paul loved flying, he also loved his social life. He was always quick to provide a listening ear, a hug, and a smile. He could make you feel better just by being around him. After retirement, he moved to Lake Hartwell. He was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church. He enjoyed Taco Tuesday with his neighborhood gang and, before COVID, having morning coffee with the other gang. He loved Jesus, his pastor, his church, his countless friends, and his family.
He is survived by his wife: Sheila (Thomas) Daniel Bishop; children: Michael Bishop; Kathryn McCarty & husband Jody, and Steven Bishop & wife Camilla; grandchildren: Paul Bishop & wife Lauren, Thomas Bishop, Kyle McCarty, Katie Harris & husband Jake, and Sara Bishop; and great-grandchildren: Wyatt and Ermersyn Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Janet Joan (Sawhill) Bishop and sisters: Betty Lincoln Fish and Beverly Sanderson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Paul was cremated in accordance with his request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lavonia First Baptist Church, P.O.
