Obituary

Mrs. Peggy Richardson Chitwood, 75, of Hartwell, GA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27th, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones.

Born on June 29th, 1950, in Elberton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Richardson and Willie Kate Burden Richardson. She was the devoted wife of 32 years to the late Joe D. Chitwood, and a loving mama whose heart always belonged to her family. Known to her grandchildren as "Meme", she poured endless love, laughter, and warmth into their lives, treasuring every moment spent with them. Her strong faith and unwavering relationship with the Lord guided her life and the way she loved others. Her legacy is one of love, faith, and strength and will live on through the hearts of those she touched.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law whom she loved as her own:
Daughter, Kristi Cook (Jeff) of Hartwell. Peggy's grandchildren: Heather Toney (Brian), Kaitlyn Corbett (Alex), Sam Cook (Josi), Eli Cook (Abby). Great Grandchildren: Hayden Bryan (Natalie), Braden Toney, Carter Toney, Fynli Cook, Emory Cook. Great-Great Granddaughter: Raelynn Joe Bryan.
Daughter, Lori Ledford (Gary) of Carnesville. Peggy's grandchildren: Kaci Ivester (Coty), Matthew Ledford. Great Grandchildren: Jaxson Chapman, Iva Mae Ivester.
Daughter, April Kloes of Elberton. Peggy's grandchildren: Scott Johnson, Austin Kloes (Laura Beth). Great Grandchildren: Emily Johnson, Teagan Johnson, Oaklynn Kloes, Wrenleigh Kloes, Maelee Kloes, and Lincoln Kloes.

She is also survived by four sisters and one brother: Jane Jordan. Connie Voegeli (Charles), and Beth McDaniel all of Hartwell, Gail Smith and Lanier Richardson (Becky) both of Anderson, SC. Her faithful sidekick Yorkie, Ginger also survives.

Mrs. Chitwood is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe D. Chitwood; two brothers-in-law: Max Jordan and Billy Smith.

Their family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to her caregiver, Ms. Willie Glenn, and her nurses Greta Eberhardt and Candice Shiflet whose compassion and dedication brought comfort and care in her final days. Also, her adopted Granddaughter, Kelly Robertson, for the endless supply of potato soup.

The family will receive friends Monday, September 29, 2025 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell.  Other times the family will be at the home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Peggy Chitwood will be Monday, September 29, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Gary Ledford officiating.  Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
