Mr. Raleigh David "R D " Burroughs, 85, of 76 Rowland Dr, Hartwell, died Sunday, January 25 at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Born on November 18, 1923 in Madison County GA, he was the son of the late Quilla Guy Burroughs and Mattie Thompson Burroughs.He was a retired controller from the DuPont Savannah River Plant and was the founder and owner of the Swamp Guinea Restaurant in Hartwell which he and his wife Leila founded in 1970.He was of the Baptist Faith and a WW II U S Navy veteran.
Survivors include his son, Brian Burroughs and his wife Judy of Bowersville; a daughter, Cheryl Perry and her husband Mike of Hartwell; five grandchildren, Carly Perry, Morgan Perry, Sam Perry, Raleigh Burroughs and Lyle Burroughs and a great-grandchild, Lydia J. Burroughs also survives.Mr. Burroughs was preceded in death by his wife, Leila Strickland Burroughs; a sister, Annelle Carter and four brothers, Roscoe Burroughs, Ralph Burroughs, Rudell Burroughs and Ray Burroughs.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 27 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home with Dr. R. Allen Stewart officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home ~ Hartwell Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.The family is at the home.
