Obituary

Judge Ray Anthony "Tony" Welborn, 63, of 164 Azalea Drive, Hartwell, loving husband, father, and grandfather died peacefully with his family by his side, Monday, October 29, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born on April 29, 1949 in Royston, GA, he was the son of the late Sloan P. Welborn and Eunice Byrum Welborn. Tony served Hart County as Chief Magistrate Judge since January 1, 2010. He retired as Captain of Investigations from the Hartwell Police Department after 34 years of service. Tony was a member of the Hartwell Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 109 and the Georgia Peace Officers Association.He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, and box drummer with the Praise Team. He was a US Air Force Veteran serving in Korea during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Susan Ankerich Welborn of the home; one son, Jason Welborn and his wife Melissa of Hartwell; one daughter, Stephanie Holland and her husband Wade of Demorest; seven grandchildren: Evan Welborn, Bryson Welborn, Ansleigh Holland, Karleigh Holland, Kelsie Lowery, Karlie Lowery, and Eli Lowery, two brothers: James Welborn of Lavonia, Don Welborn of Hartwell; one sister, Joy Stratton of Elberton.Mr. Welborn was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Welborn; and two sisters: Louise W. Roe and Ann Welborn.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Coleman and Rev. Anthony Davis officiating.Burial will be in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday night.The family is at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested special memorials be made to Cross Roads Baptist Church Pavilion Fund, 3636 Lavonia Highway, Hartwell, GA30643.
