CPT. Richard H. Gurley, 63, of Bowersville, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023 at his home.

Born on January 17, 1960 in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late James H. "Johnny" Gurley and Mary Edna Sosby Gurley. CPT. Gurley graduated from Hart County High School and Southern Technical Institute in Marietta GA.  Richard was a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church, and a veteran of the US Army where he served in Operation Desert Storm as a helicopter pilot. He was in the Army for 14 years where he achieved the rank of Captain. After his active military service he worked for Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. for 26 years as an Engineer.

Survivors include his three aunts: Shirley G. Green of Bowersville, Helen Terry of Clemson, SC, Sara Gurley of Hartwell; and several cousins and many friends. CPT. Gurley is preceded in death by his parents; sister: Debbie Gurley Kelley; five uncles and their wives: Frank Gurley, Dwain Gurley (Leighton), Alvin "Buster" Gurley (Juanita), Joe Lum Gurley (Ann), and Bobby Lee Gurley; and three aunts and their husbands: Kathryn Wells, Betty E. Duncan (Calvin), and Mary Leon Thomason (Buddy).

The family will receive friends Friday morning from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Cross Roads Baptist Church.  Other times the family will be at the home of his aunt, Shirley Green, 68 Gurley Road, Bowersville.

Funeral services for CPT. Richard Gurley will be held Friday, February 10, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at the Cross Roads Baptist Church with Rev. Sean Payne and Mr. David Brooks officiating.  Burial will be in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers optional, memorials may be made to the Cross Roads Baptist Church Family Life Center, 3636 Lavonia Hwy, Hartwell, GA 30643.
