Mr. Roscoe Silas Chitwood, age 86, of Martin, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at his home.
Born October 4, 1922, in Hart County, he was the son of the late Silas C. & Sadie (Reynolds) Chitwood. He was an insurance agent with State Mutual Insurance, Coastal States Insurance, and Franklin Insurance Agency and retired after many years of faithful service. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the Emanuel Sunday School Class. He also served the church as former treasurer, deacon and RA Basketball Coach. Mr. Chitwood was a US Army veteran, where he served during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother: Marvin Chitwood and sister: Hazel Chitwood Moon.
Survivors include his wife: Nellie (Black) Chitwood; daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and David Thurman of Martin; brother and sister-in-law: Steve & Irene Chitwood of Toccoa; sister and brother-in-law: Madge & L.G. Bond of Toccoa; and several nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Dr. Ross Layne and Rev. Doug Goss officiating. Burial will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens with Rev. Josh Harvill officiating. Members of the RA Basketball team will serve as pallbearers.
