Obituary

Mr. Roy Lee Harper Sr. 84, of 45 Pineview Lane, Hartwell, died Thursday, August 2 at Hart Care Center.

Born on September 4, 1927 in Frame WV, he was the son of the late George Washington Harper and Addie Chapman Harper.He first retired from Ford Motor Company and then Flora Daniel Construction Company, where he was a Commercial Construction Superintendent.He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #1207, the Oddfellows and was the former President of the Charleston Motorcycle Club, Charleston WV.He was a member of the Abundant Life Baptist Church and the Young at Heart; he also attended the River of Life Church.Mr. Harper was a WW II US Army Air Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater and was formerly stationed at Camp Currahee Mountain GA.

Survivors include a daughter, July L. Lawson and her husband Wayne of Lavonia; a son, Roy L. Harper Jr. of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Susan Harper of Canon; a sister, Dollie Steele of Hartwell; four grandchildren, Scott Lawson, Lindsay Lawson, Sara Perpall and her husband Ryan and Amanda Chastain; four great-grandchildren, Coley Chastain, Gwyneth Wilson, Montana Chastain and Mackenzie Perpall; a father to Pam Chastain; a grandfather to Natasha Waldrop and also loved and survived by several brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.Mr. Harper was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gwenell Fowler Harper; five brothers, Farmer Harper, Emory Harper, Elmer Harper, George Harper Jr. and Herbert Harper and four sisters, Minnie Fouty, Maysel Rucker, Dessie Wilson and Sylvia Parsons.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Ken Brewer and Rev. Ken Buffington officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park with military honors.

The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday night.The family is at the home of his daughter, Judy & Wayne Lawson, 30 Baker Street, Lavonia.Flowers optional, memorials may be made to the Abundant Life Baptist Church, PO Box 237, Hartwell, GA30643 or to the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter, 870 Bear Creek Road, Lavonia GA 30553
