Obituary
Mrs. Ruth Buchanan Rice, 89, of 130 Fairview Ave, Hartwell, died Friday, April 8, 2011 at Hartwell Health Care Center.
Born on April 22, 1921 in Cleveland SC, she was the daughter of the late Richmond Burnett Buchanan and Nora McCombs Buchanan.She worked for many years in textile mills in Georgia and South Carolina until she and her late husband Dorsey Rice opened Rice's Lakeside Grocery in 1967.She was a faithful member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church and attended as long as her health permitted.She loved her church family.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Rice O'Kelley of Hartwell; ten grandchildren whom she adored, Elaine (Doug) Hall, Jennifer (Greg) Carnes, Ronald Perry, Tony (Cindy) Lawrence and Traci (Quentin) Mason all of Hartwell, Todd (Paige) Lawrence of Peachtree City GA, Julie (Manuel) Gonzalez and Amanda (Matt) James of Gainesville GA, Caroline Rice of Asheville NC and David (Nahoko) Rice of Japan; seventeen great-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren , who were the light of her life; two sisters, Hazel Buchanan of Marietta SC and Marcelle Madison of Slater SC; a son-in-law, Charles Lawrence of Hartwell and a daughter-in-law, Mary Rice.A special sister-in-law, Claudine Rice, several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Janet Gravely also survives.Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William Dorsey Rice Sr.; a daughter, Gaynelle Rice Lawrence; a son, William Dorsey "Billy" Rice Jr.; an infant grandson Jason Perry and an infant great great-granddaughter, Taylor Williams.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Meeks officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday night.The family is at the home.Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 1543 Anderson Hwy, Hartwell, GA 30643.
