Mrs. Shirley Thompson Callis Callaway, 88, of Fairview Avenue, Hartwell, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018 at Hart Care Center.
Born on December 25, 1929, in Boydton, VA, she was the daughter of the late Edger H. Thompson and Annie May Steele Thompson. Mrs. Callaway was former social worker for the Hart County TMR School. Mrs. Callaway was a former member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and Hartwell Garden Club. She was a past president of the Theo Oglesby Women on Mission and past Worthy Matron of the Nancy Hart Chapter #398 O.E.S. Mrs. Callaway was also a LVA tutor for the Nancy Hart Literacy Council. Mrs. Callaway was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hartwell.
Survivors include one son: Mark Callis & Elma of Pisgah Forest, NC; two daughters: Linda Buckley & Bob of Sacramento, CA, and Elaine Tomlin & Mark of Hartwell; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Callaway was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands: Garland Laster Callis and William "Bill" Callaway; and by several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Dr. Hugh Kirby officiating.Burial will be in the Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery, in South Hill, VA on Saturday morning.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346, or a charity of one's choice.
