Obituary

Shirley Horman Darracott, 66, of Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at her home on Lake Hartwell.

Born on October 13, 1957 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Malcolm Horman and Virginia Bowden Horman. Shirley received her bachelor's degree from Furman University where she was named the outstanding physical education major. She obtained her master's degree from Wake Forest University where she met her husband, Chip. She earned her PhD in kinesiology from the University of Georgia where she served as a data analyst at the educational research lab while caring for her children. While Shirley's priority was family, she was also highly respected as a college professor. She held positions at Georgia Tech, Oxford College of Emory University, and Augusta University, retiring in 2017.

Shirley valued spending time with her family and planning meaningful family experiences, including a three week RV cross-country road trip to the Grand Canyon. She enjoyed camping, playing tennis, slalom water-skiing, and teaching adults, college students, and children how to swim. She directed the Children's Ministry at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church in Oxford, GA. Shortly after moving to Augusta, Shirley continued her children's ministries and became the chair of the mission committee at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church overseeing local, national, and international missions. At Augusta University, she co-taught study abroad trips to South Africa and to El Salvador, where she partnered with Habitat for Humanity working on a house alongside students. Shirley loved being by the water and fulfilled her lifelong dream of living on the lake when she moved with Chip to Lake Hartwell in 2018.

Survivors include her husband: Charles R "Chip" Darracott III; son: Charles T. "Charlie" Darracott of Augusta, GA; two daughters: Kathryn "Katie" Woei-A-Sack (Anthony) of Atlanta, GA and Christine "Christy" Parker (Davis) of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren: Anna and Thomas Woei-A-Sack; one brother: Jim Horman (Brenda); three sisters: Janet Horman, Kathy Pay (Alec), and Diane Hyman (David); sister-in-law Julie Black (Steve); and many nieces and nephews.
