Dorothy Sue Randall Cawthon passed away Saturday, February 17 at Hart Care Center.
Sue was born on January 18, 1927 in Lavonia, Georgia, to the late Clarence Richard Randall and Rilla Pierce Randall. She graduated from Lavonia High School, attended secretarial school in Atlanta and then returned to Lavonia where she married Fred Cawthon. When her husband was stationed in Charlotte, North Carolina, during World War II, she worked as a switchboard operator at Duke Power. After the war ended, Sue and Fred returned to Lavonia where they owned and operated Cawthon Grocery in Toccoa in the early 1950s and the Economy Super Market in Lavonia in the 1960s. Sue and her sister-in-law, Jo Cawthon, owned and operated the Dorothy Jo Dress Shop in Lavonia. Next, she took a position as office manager and payroll supervisor in Elberton with Rhoda Lee Clothing of New York.
In the 1970s Sue began a long, happy, career with the Lavonia Housing Authority where she ultimately became the Executive Director until her retirement in 1995.
Sue lived the majority of her life in Lavonia, and she loved her hometown and the people in it. Sue was an avid bridge club player. She was well known among friends and family for her cooking, especially her chocolate pies. Also, she was an active member of Lavonia First Baptist Church.
Sue played an active role in the lives of her daughter and her three grandchildren, who loved going to "grandmother's" for weekends, holidays, and weeks during their summer vacations.
After retirement, Sue enjoyed spending more time with her daughter and son-in-law, with whom she traveled around the United States and abroad.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband Fred Walter Cawthon; and sisters: Geraldine Thomas, Julia Mae Bryant, Veronica O'Barr, and Wilma Thomas.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Rudy Warren of Dunwoody; grandchildren Susan Warren, Trent (Katy) Warren, and Ansley Warren; four great-grandchildren: Grace and Ellie Warren, Adair and Wesley Goyarts.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens - North.
