Suzanne Sosby Wheeler, 72, of Smith Street, Hartwell GA, died Saturday, February 28, 2015, at her son's residence in Clayton, GA.
Born in Millen, GA, on April 14, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Kathleen Duncan Sosby. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Franklin Sosby, Jr. and John Thomas Sosby, M.D.She was the widow of Robert Alison Wheeler.She graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in Augusta, GA, and received a B.S. in Education from The Women's College of Georgia in Milledgeville and both a M.S. in Education and an Educational Specialist Degree from The University of Georgia.She taught in Augusta, Comer, and Athens for a number of years.She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where she had served as Senior Warden, ECW President, and Altar Guild Chairman; Nancy Hart Literacy Council where she served as Recording Secretary for many years; former member of John Benson Chapter of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution; Pine Tree Garden Club of Hartwell, and The Designers Club of Duluth; and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. having most recently served as President.She was a former Azalea District Director of The Garden Club of Georgia, an Environmental Studies Consultant, a Gardening Studies Consultant, a Landscape Design Consultant, an Accredited Flower Show Judge, a Four-Star member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., a State Life Member, a Deep South Region Life Member, a National Garden Clubs, Inc. Life Member, and was Azalea District Most Outstanding Member in 2003. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., she served on the Deep South Region Council and National Garden Clubs, Inc. Board of Directors.She completed the Master Gardener training in 2000.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Frank and Paige Wheeler of Clayton GA, daughter and son in law Kathleen and David Teel of Hartwell, and four grandchildren, Nathan and Duncan Wheeler and Jordan and Alison Teel.She is also survived by a niece, Elizabeth Sosby Aspacio of Atlanta, GA, and her husband LTC Regino Aspacio (USMC) of Stuttgart, Germany.
Graveside services will be Monday, March 2, 2105 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston GA with Rev. Charles E. Stutsman officiating.
A memorial service celebrating Suzanne's life will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cecil B. Day Chapel, State Botanical Gardens of Georgia, Athens GA, with a reception at follow the service.
