IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas "Tommy"
Leon Mchaney
April 2, 1934 – May 11, 2025
Thomas (Tommy) Leon McHaney, aged 91, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of May 11, 2025. Born in Uniontown, Alabama on April 2, 1934, to Elsie Smith McHaney and Ollie Thomas McHaney, Tommy spent his childhood with his older brother Johnny, younger sister Bobbie Anna, and many wonderful cousins. Known for his sharp mind and mathematical prowess, Tommy preferred chasing adventures during his youth, a time he fondly remembered.
Tommy's passion for baseball earned him a spot on a professional team, but love led him to marry Betty Morrison McHaney at the age of 17. Their love story spanned 73 years. After serving in the Navy, Tommy and Betty settled in Atlanta, GA, where he successfully ran his own business. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Betty in their RV, relaxing at the lake, and fishing.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty McHaney; daughters, Jill Ford (Alan) and Julie Walker (Andy); sister, Bobbie Anna McHaney Hasty; granddaughter, Lauren Upchurch (Matt); and three cherished great-grandchildren, Ford, Emma, and Riley Upchurch. He was predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Ollie McHaney, and brother, John McHaney.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Lavonia, GA. A celebration hosted by his daughters will follow. Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home of Lavonia.
