Urban Francis Wolf, 99, died on April 17, 2024, at his home in Hartwell, GA. Urban was born in Evansville, IN where he lived until moving to Hartwell in late 2021 to be closer to his daughter and her family.
Urban was born on September 20, 1924, to Henry F. and Anna M. (Koressel) Wolf. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1942. He also attended Lockyear's College of Business.
Urban is survived by his daughter, Jane Medlin and her husband, Ken, of Hartwell, GA, a son, Jerry and his wife, Susan, of Westfield, IN, three grandchildren, Brian Wolf (Meleana) of Honolulu, HI, Alex Wolf (Kelsey) of Moreland Hills, OH, and Christie Medlin of Hartwell, GA; four great-grandchildren, Nanea Wolf and Nalu Wolf of Honolulu, HI, and Whitman Wolf and West Wolf of Moreland Hills, OH, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 66 years, Mary Doris Boultinghouse Wolf, and his sister, Anna Marie Patterson.
Urban was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946 stationed in Guam and Saipan. After the war, he worked for Servel from 1946 until 1953. It was there he met his soon-to-be wife, Doris, at a company picnic at Burdette Park and were married on November 27, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After leaving Servel, he joined the United States Postal Service starting on a mail train that ran between Chicago and Nashville. He then transitioned to positions of increasing responsibility while rotating through the main ("old") post office on NW 2nd Street, the West Franklin Street branch, the Howell branch, the West Maryland Street branch, and the "new" main post office where he retired as manager of window operations. He continued to work as a loan officer for the Evansville Post Office Federal Credit for the next 10 years and served as president of the credit union's Board of Directors for 8 years. He later drove cars for rental car companies and car dealerships.
Urban also volunteered his time extensively. He was a member of the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary where as a "Red Coat", he delivered newspapers and mail to patients and worked in the pharmacy. He was an usher for both the Victory Theater and The Centre. As a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, he works the gates and food service for special events such as the 4-H fair and Frog Follies. His longest volunteer relationship was with the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry where he served for over twenty years. He was also proud to be a member of the Retired Veterans Memorial Club of Vanderburgh County and served as club treasurer for many years as well as participating in providing full military honors to local veterans several times a week. In recognition of his volunteer work, Urban was named the 2002 Older Hoosier of the Year representing the Southwestern Indiana Regional Council on Aging.
Urban was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (now Saint Boniface) in Evansville where he was baptized, confirmed, attended grade school, served mass, was a Boy Scout, a safety patrol boy, and was joined in marriage to Doris. He was a member of the Knights of Saint John, an usher and collection taker at weekly masses, and counted the weekly collections at the parish rectory after Sunday masses. More recently, he was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Evansville. After moving to Hartwell, he became a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, and also attended services at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Hartwell with his daughter's family.
Urban was a past member of VFW Post 2953, VFW Post 1114, and American Legion Post 8. He and Doris also attended several reunions of the 315th Bomb Wing at locations across the country. Urban was both honored and proud to be on Honor Flight of Southern Indiana EVV3 as a member of the Blue Bus Team, where he and other veterans toured the WW II, Korean War, and Viet Nam memorials in Washington DC.
In addition to his volunteer work, Urban enjoyed playing golf, shopping for cars, and playing clabber. He belonged to two couples card clubs for many years and continued to enjoy the clabber club at the Village at Holiday Healthcare where he lived prior to moving to Georgia. He and Doris also enjoyed a large circle of friends that regularly gathered at what is now Bally's Evansville Casino and Hotel.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff at The Village at Holiday Healthcare in Evansville and Brookdale Senior Living in Hartwell, as well as the many friends and extended family members that kept in touch with Urban over the years.
Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell and Pierre Funeral Home in Evansville are providing arrangements. In Hartwell, friends may call at Strickland Funeral Home, 305 Cleveland Avenue, Hartwell, GA from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2024. Visitation hours in Evansville will be at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 West Franklin Street, Evansville IN 47712 at 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2024.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2701 West Franklin Street, Evansville, IN 47712 at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, followed by entombment at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum, 2500 Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, IN 47720, with full military honors provided by the Retired Veterans Memorial Club of Vanderburgh County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Boniface Catholic Church, 418 N.
