Obituary

Mrs. Vera Pitts Kay, age 89, of Lavonia, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Lake Pointe Assisted Living Center.
Born December 8, 1920, in Oakway, SC, she was the daughter of the late Warren & Mattie Haulbrook Pitts. She was a retired educator at Lavonia Elementary School, where she served for more than twenty years. Mrs. Kay was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church, WMU, and the Margaret Burrell Sunday School Class. She also served the church in many capacities, including as Sunday School Secretary. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Lavonia. Mrs. Kay was a devoted mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James P. "Jake" Kay, Sr. and a brother, William Pitts.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law: Dr. James Perry Kay, Jr. & Aneah A. Kay; grandchildren: Whitney Leigh & Justin Berelc and Lauren Marisa Kay; and brothers: David Pitts and Clyde Pitts.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Finger, Rev. Richard Bielski, and Rev. Mike Smith officiating. The staff and residents of Lake Pointe Assisted Living Center will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. At other hours, the family will be at the home of Dr. James Perry Kay, Jr. Memorials may be made to the Lavonia First Baptist Church.
