Mrs. Vernese Jernigan Sheriff Haynes, age 92, of Elberton, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Spring Valley Health Care.
Born July 30, 1920, in Hornsby, TN, she was the daughter of the late Eutreal & Nannie Atkinson Jernigan.
She was twice married first to the late Hubert A. Sheriff of Bowersville then to the late Alfred E. Haynes of Elberton. Mrs. Haynes was a member of Elberton Christian Church.
She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law: Howard & Marlene Sheriff of Bowersville; two granddaughters: Donna S. Jackson & Jerry of Bowersville, and Danette S. Duncan & Barry of Rock Hill, SC; four great grandchildren: Elizabeth and Nathan Jackson of Bowersville and Charlie and Chelsie Duncan of Rock Hill, SC; two step children: Nelda H. Dickson of Royston and David Haynes & Jeri of Texas; five step grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.
Mrs. Haynes was the last member of her immediate family being preceded in death by her parents: sister: Verble Jernigan Glass; brothers: Vernon Jernigan and Gene Jernigan; and a step son-in-law Douglas Dickson.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Bowersville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.At other times the family will be at the home of Howard & Marlene Sheriff.
