Obituary
Mr. Vernon G. Edwards, Born July 1, 1934, retired Superintendent of the Hart County School System, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 in Hartwell GA.
A son of the late Joe L. and Frances Hall Edwards, he was born, reared and spent most of his life in Hartwell.A graduate of Hartwell High School, he received his undergraduate and graduate education at Furman University, the University of Georgia and the University of North Carolina.
A U. S. Navy veteran, he was a member of the Navy League, the U. S. Naval Institute, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member or former member of the Kiwanis Club, the Hartwell Golf Club, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the Georgia Association of School Superintendents, the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, the Hart County Retired Teachers Association, the Hart County Chamber of Commerce, the Hart County Board of Health, the Hart County Library Board, the Hart County Industrial Board, the Tri-County Development Authority, the United States Golf Association, and the First Baptist Church of Hartwell.
Survivors include his wife: Betty Ammons Edwards; his sons: Mike Edwards & his wife Jackie of W. Columbia SC and Joe Edwards and his wife Cheryl of Tampa FL; four grandchildren: Jonathan Edwards, Matthew Edwards, Benjamin Edwards and Megan Edwards also survive.Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Marjorie E. Temples.
Funeral services with Naval Honors will be held Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Dr. Steve Albanese, Dr. Hugh Kirby and Rev. Carter Tucker officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday morning.The family will be at the home.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hartwell, 81 E. Howell Street, Hartwell GA 30643.
