Mr. Walter Lee King, age 87, of Lavonia died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 following an extended illness.
Born May 21, 1921, in Anderson County, SC, he was the son of the late Memphis & Sylvia (Nix) King. He was a WWII Veteran, having served in the US Army. He was former Commander of the American Legion Post 92 and a member of Masonic Lodge # 241. Mr. King was a retired businessman. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Eunice (Brady) King; brothers: James King, Junior King, & Almar King; sisters: Inez Chastain and Sally Mae Pearson.
Survivors include his wife: Dorothy (Dutton) King of Lavonia; sons and daughters-in-law: Leonard & Diane King of Lavonia and Cecil & Beverly King of Canon; step-children: Gayle Whitfield, Sue & Gerald Tiller, Nellie Smith, Herman & Becky Blackwell, Thurmond & Nancy Blackwell, & Leonard Blackwell; brothers: Woodrow King of Royston, W.C. King of Lavonia, & Jimmy King of Winterville; sisters: Hazel Fleming of Anderson, SC, Sarah Bruce of Canon, Joanne King of Winterville, Becky Blackwell of Hull, & Neria Barnett of Jefferson; grandchildren: Angie Hicks, Stacey Lowe, Alison Segars, & Nicole Stafford; and great-grandchildren: Brandon King, Nicci Hicks, Brittany McCormack, Jeremy Hicks, Blake Segars, Ryleigh Segars, & Chloe Segars.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Revs. David Wilson and Joe Renfro officiating. Burial with full honors will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Corey Pulliam officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. At other hours, the family will be at the home of Cecil & Beverly King, Canon, GA.
