Obituary

Mr. William Howell "Bill" Callaway, 88, of Hartwell, GA, died April 13, 2013, with his three children at his side.
He was born on February 21, 1925 in Athens, GA to the late Randall E. and Mamie Mapp Callaway and grew up in Wilkes County, graduating from Washington High School in 1941.He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1944.He spent two years in the US Army, from 1944 to 1946 as part of the Los Alamos Project.
He married Lynn Johnson of Alma, GA in 1949.He started work at Hart Electric Membership Corporation as an engineer in 1951.He became manager of Hart EMC in 1964 and remained there until his retirement in 1991.He owned and operated Callaway Christmas Trees for more that 20 years.
He was a member and former chairman of the board of deacons at Hartwell First Baptist Church and was a member of the Doc Adams Sunday School Class.He was a member and past president of Hartwell Kiwanis Club, former member and chairman of Hart County Hospital Authority, member of the American Legion, a former director and treasurer of the Hart County Recreation Committee, and former director of the Georgia Christmas Tree Association.
Survivors include his second wife, Shirley T. Callis Callaway; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Van Senkbeil; daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Lee Brinson; son and daughter-in-law David and Nancy Callaway.His grandchildren include Jeremy (Karen) Senkbeil, Caleb Senkbeil, Luke Senkbeil, and Zac Senkbeil; Cal (Haley) Brinson and Leanne (Andrew) Jones; Taylor Callaway and Caitlin Callaway.He has one great-granddaughter, Holland Senkbeil.He is also survived by stepchildren Linda (Bob) Buckley, Mark (Elma) Callis, and Elaine (Mark) Tomlin and their families.Mr. Callaway was preceded in death by his first wife, Lynn Johnson Callaway.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 16 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First Baptist Church with the Reverend Carter Tucker officiating.Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 pm. Monday evening.The family is at their respective homes.Memorials in his honor may be made to Hartwell First Baptist Church 81 E.
