Mr. William R. Scales, age 87, of 210 Bowman St, Lavonia, Ga., died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Cobb Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 3, 1919 in Lula, Georgia.He was the son of the late Rev. W.F. and Martha Bowen Scales.He was the husband of Jane B. Scales.He was employed by Chrysler Corporation for 33 years. He successfully owned and operated two sporting good stores in Brunswick, Ga. He later moved to Lake Hartwell in 1983 and lived there for 14 years.Mr. Scales was a member of the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, president of the Brunswick Mall association and active in south Fulton Civic Club.He was also a member of Freemason and Royal Arch.He was a graduate of Young Harris College, attended the University of Georgia, Georgia State College, and Massey Business College.He was a deacon in the Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served in many other capacities.
He is survived by his wife, a son: Bill Scales; sisters: Charlene Farrell, and Jacqueline Smith; brothers: Johnny Scales and Truett Scales; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters; Inez Scales McMury, Margorie Scales Chatham and Sarah Scales Denman; and brothers: Lee Scales and Carl Scales.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the Lavonia First Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Finger and Rev. Richard Bielski officiating. Interment will follow in Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, White County at 3:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of sister: Charlene Farrell, 5444 Vickery Street, Lavonia.
