Pastor Winfred Pointer, age 71, of Lavonia, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at his home.
Born September 22, 1937, in Haralson County, GA, he was the son of the late Elihue & Jessie Mae (Brooks) Pointer. He was a painter by trade and was previously a police officer in Polk County, FL for many years. He was pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church, Hwy. 59, Lavonia.
He is survived by his wife: Carolyn (Standridge) Pointer; sons & daughters-in-law: Randy & Joyce Pointer of Lavonia and Bobby & Jane Pointer of Martin; daughters & sons-in-law: Pamela & Jerry Watkins of Lavonia, Gail & Ronnie Corbitt of Lavonia, and Karee & Bryan Bullock of Jefferson; daughter: Kathi Witlock of Lavonia; brother: Chester Pointer of Auburndale, FL; sisters: Lilian Coggins of Auburndale, FL and Gracy Steele of Ft. Payne, AL; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by children: twins, Winfred Lee Pointer and Penny Jane Pointer, and Donna Denise Pointer.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Pointer officiating. Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Gardens –North.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
